What some businesses are beginning to realize though is that their workforce will need to learn new skills AC\/DC (After COVID\/During COVID).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s an old joke:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A CFO says to the CEO, \u201cWe are investing a lot in training our staff. What if they leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To which the CEO replies, \u201cWhat if we don\u2019t invest and they stay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several years, organizations like the World Economic Forum, Gartner Research, and others, have been urging manufacturers to start on a transformation journey to embrace the new opportunities of the <strong><a href=\"\/product\/business-digitization\/\">Fourth Industrial\u00a0Revolution\u00a0(4IR)\u00a0and digitization.<\/a><\/strong> Some companies have made the decision to embark on that journey, and one of the things they have found is that you can\u2019t transform your business if you don\u2019t give your staff the chance to reskill and re-educate themselves to understand what the \u2018new business\u2019\u00a0needs,\u00a0how it will be different, and how their own work will change.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Covid-19 pandemic\u00a0is going to affect\u00a0how we operate and work so much that businesses\u00a0which\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0consider\u00a0reskilling and re-educating\u00a0their workforce\u00a0will lose their market position and maybe worse, their most valuable staff.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why reskill<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Companies that are now re-strategizing to help them position themselves for an AC\/DC life are also learning that the new technologies of 4IR and\u00a0digitization\u00a0require them to change their internal skilling and education programs, according to\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2019\/04\/skills-jobs-investing-in-people-inclusive-growth\/\"><strong>World Economic Forum<\/strong><\/a>. Companies may also want to offer re-skilling to their staff as a substitute for lay-offs, which is perceived as one of the dangers of digitization.<\/p>\n<p>In a report on the future of work, McKinsey has forecast that by 2030 over 30% of the working population will need to change occupations or upgrade their skills. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/getting-practical-about-the-future-of-work\"><strong>Businesses are already\u00a0finding\u00a0that they cannot hire all the new skills<\/strong> <\/a>they need. Re-skilling should be seen as an investment to develop an organization\u2019s internal talent so that the business can undergo the transformation required to compete. Internal talent development also gives a faster ROI than taking the time and effort to hire from outside. By putting off re-skilling now, businesses risk not being able to cope in the AC\/DC world.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to reskill<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>By now it\u2019s obvious that we won\u2019t return to the world of work we knew BC. Working from home if possible is going to be a standard for many months to come. Therefore, organizations will need to look at learning options that are not\u00a0location dependent.
